This two-day event offered a transdisciplinary space for inquiry and analysis of the dynamics of science and technology between Switzerland and the Latin American region. Drawing on experts from Life Sciences, Engineering, Maths, Art, Humanities, and Business, the Science & Innovation Summit presented multidisciplinary research talks, panel discussions and a world café to deep dive into the most pressing issues in the region. Topics during these two days included: STEM, business and environment, academic diasporas and brain drain, startups and new technologies, sustainability, social innovation, smart cities, circular economy, and clean energy as well as exnovation and the benefits of the visual arts in medicine.

The Leading House network also presented the state of the art and funding instruments as well as showcase Swiss policies and institutions that work together with Latin American researchers. During the first day of the event, the panelists highlighted that science and innovation have contributed significantly to the improvement of our living standards over the past 50 to 100 years. Progress will continue vigorously in the future, particularly in medical, digital, and environmental technologies. However, for inventions to become innovations, they must be supported by important economic means and adequate policies to move to market through industrial production. There is a good potential for collaborations between Swiss scientific Institutes and their Latin American counterparts.

The second day of the event was very case-oriented and issue-focused. The speakers highlighted several promising projects in Latin America as well as the key role of investors and business in bringing inventions to market. Significant socio-economic and financial challenges were identified to bring projects forward. It was concluded that cooperation with all stakeholders is critical. Overall, this summit on science and innovation was a great opportunity for both Swiss and Latin American beneficiaries. The event, besides providing a panoramic view of small and bigger initiatives, opened up interesting contacts and face-to-face discussions with established and rising Swiss and Latin American scientists. This event was the first of two Science & Innovation Summits planned by the Leading House for the Latin American Region at the University of St. Gallen. The next Science & Innovation Summit will take place in 2024.
