Latam Compact 2018 From the classroom into the Amazon! Students' future prospects depend on how adaptable they are to a rapidly changing international environment (i.e., migrations, climate change, fourth industrial revolution). We believe in equipping the next generation of professionals with more integrative skills which target at the same time organisational, societal and environmental concerns, respectively: - the capacity to adapt to contextual landscapes and situations - to empathise within different cultural contexts - to create value from sustainable practices The 2018 edition of the Latam Compact Course offers HSG Master Students the possibility to enrol in a block seminar which allows them to get immersed into Amazonian affairs. The course takes place between November 03-10, during the University's Autumn Break. "Negotiating the Amazon" brings together university students and local Amazonian producers. We take students out of the classroom into the forest because we strongly believe that the above-mentioned capacities should also be developed outside the classroom and in direct contact with the concerned people. The project makes use of old and new technologies as educational tools: webinars and online learning portfolio are combined with ethnographic methodologies (live meeting, observing, interacting and exchanging during an immersive one-week fieldwork). The course is structured in two parts. The first one is a self-guided study based on literature about the Amazonian history and 4 webseminars which will be made available to the students in the beginning of October. The second part of the course takes place in Brazil and put the students in direct contact with Amazonian entrepreneurs, family farmers, local cooperatives or indigenous artisans. Combining digital and on-the-ground research, the course participants will produce a final report - based on the case studies - which will address aspects that are considered relevant to the sustainability of activities carried out by selected Amazonian entrepreneurs. Application process The application process is closed now. The call and 15 available seats were open to all Master programs of the University of St. Gallen. Costs related to accommodation and flights remained at the expense of each participant and can sum up to CHF 2'000. Enrolment fee was CHF 200.
